It’s been a few months since I’ve been able to pay attention to unboxing my collection – life, as they say, gets in the way – in this case a new job and all that goes with that learning curve.

I’m excited enough to see an example of how good this material can cut that it prompted me to post this entry. One of the folks at the lapidary club purchased a 14 carat stone and cut it, slightly shallow to make up for the darker material. My fear has always been that this material would not sparkle or that it would be too brown when cut, but as you can see, while there is a distinct brown tinge characteristic of pyrope present, there is also a glorious deep cherry red and it really sparkles.

‘scuse the fingerprints and occasionally NQR photography… I didn’t have my scales with me so I’m not sure the weight, but it was a good 6mm diameter or so. Will confirm…
